The Client: Reimagining Analytics for Smarter Decision-Making
Onyx Gaming is a leading supplier of electronic gaming machines and systems to hospitality venues across Australia. It provides data-driven operational guidance and insights, enabling venues to enhance product offerings and optimise revenue generation.
A recent acquisition and merger prompted the company to consolidate two legacy data systems into a single, best-in-class analytics platform, providing venues with full self-service visibility into their gaming machine performance.
The Challenge: Legacy Systems Limiting Data Quality and Scale
Two siloed legacy data systems introduced reporting complexity and restricted visibility, resulting in data inconsistencies between the two systems. The Onyx team was spending excessive time diagnosing and resolving customer-reported data issues, which not only negatively impacted the customer experience but also limited the team’s capacity to deliver value and enhance their offerings.
Limited automation and deployment rigour also resulted in increased manual efforts around routine data engineering tasks and led to higher operational costs. At the same time, legacy data modelling practices were escalating cloud infrastructure costs.
Onyx engaged V2 AI to build an advanced analytics solution that could integrate data sources from both legacy systems and deliver a range of internal and external data products. They sought a solution that would enhance data quality and trust while cost-effectively scaling. They aimed to enhance existing service offerings and establish a foundation for future revenue growth through data product monetisation.
The Solution: Predictive Analytics on a Unified Data Foundation
V2 AI leveraged Snowflake on AWS and dbt Cloud to integrate data from a range of systems and develop a single source of truth for operational analytics. The new system presented a broader view of the customer, capturing game machine performance and customer loyalty data in a centralised location.
V2 AI also implemented predictive analytics and statistical data modelling foundations alongside a custom visualisation using modern libraries like React. The cutting-edge user interface allows users to build fully customisable graphs and charts with flexibility and clarity. It enabled the Onyx team to transition from intuition to data-driven decision-making, which accelerated growth.
The V2 AI team used internal IP solutions and engineering best practices to accelerate the project. The unified analytics solution was built from the ground up and rolled into production within six months.
Value Delivered: Internal Capability and Long-Term Benefits
V2 AI enhanced both the depth and quality of analytics while ensuring a future-proof solution that scales and operates cost-effectively.
Increased end-customer satisfaction
V2 AI efforts to ensure data freshness, consistency, and accuracy have significantly reduced time spent diagnosing and remediating venue-reported data issues (from weeks to hours), increasing end-customer satisfaction. Advanced analytics enables venues to access the in-depth insights necessary to enhance game machine performance. New venues can now be onboarded to the platform within a few minutes.
New opportunities for business growth
The number of business Intelligence (BI) dashboards and reports has been drastically simplified. Insights from the consolidated data provide new directions for increasing venue performance and efficiency. The Onyx team now has a complete view of venue performance and can make data-driven decisions with greater confidence.
They have identified new service offerings to better meet the needs of both venues and their gaming customers. This has strengthened Onyx’s position as a leading provider in a competitive market.
Capability uplift
The V2 AI team proactively introduced engineering best practices and enhanced test, governance and DataOps capabilities. Innovative technical solutions that orchestrate a range of tooling introduced automation and increased overall engineering maturity within Onyx. For example, infrastructure-as-code methodologies enabled the team to transition from one to three report-building environments, streamlining report development and testing.
Reduced operational costs
The unified platform integrated eight different data sources, eliminating existing redundancy and reporting complexity. Data consolidation, along with other infrastructure optimisations, has enabled Onyx to have a pathway to deprecate its current reporting stack. Migration is estimated to bring approximately 30% annual savings.
Team skill uplift
V2 AI worked closely with the Onyx data team to provide hands-on technology and infrastructure training, thereby developing in-house capabilities from the outset. Early involvement of Onyx engineers in new platform development ensured their complete ownership of the platform, with no long-term reliance on V2 AI.
This collaborative approach reflects how V2 operates. We help client teams develop the skills they need to take full ownership of the solutions we deliver.
Unified Platform, Elevated Capability
V2 delivered a unified data platform as a single source of truth for gaming machine performance and customer loyalty data. The platform consolidated Onyx’s reporting and data infrastructure, enhancing data accuracy while reducing operational costs. As a future-proof solution, it created a solid foundation and opened up their platform for the next generation of data products. V2 also provided automation and capability upliftment to boost overall engineering maturity.
